The State of Black Salons... The search for Clientele:

A number of black-owned stylists across the East Coast and throughout the country have experienced a significant decrease in clientele.

According to the Professional Consultants & Resources, the salon and hair care industry is a 75.38 billion dollar business.  This is an increase of 4.1% over the comp year. However, a piece of this billion dollar pie has been diminishing for African American salons.  This is attributed primarily to four factors which are;

·         the increase of Dominican salons.
·         the trend or choice to transition from chemicals to natural hair
·         the lack of respect of a black woman’s time and absence of customer service in majority of salons.
·         Failure to use and retail good hair products specifically designed for Black hair care.
·         The lack of incentives and redirection to retain and consistently make the hair experience a necessity instead of a choice or want.

Dominican salons evolved in record numbers during the early 1980’s primarily on the East Coast in places like New York (Wall Street Journal, May 2012).  African American women primarily visited them due to the fact that they had efficient processes that resulted in less time being spent in the salon..  Dominican salons use an  assembly line approach that moved the customer along rapidly.   The end result of this process was soft silky hair at often less expensive prices than traditional salons.

Despite the prevalence of Dominican salons, there have been a number of complaints.  Specifically, African-American customers have complained of  hair loss due to  the excessive use of heat from the blow dryer during styling.  As a result, black hair would  break and snap as a result of these processes being applied to our hair.  Although the  Dominicans have taken some market share, they cannot be totally  blamed for the state of the traditional Black salon.

Transitioning from chemicals to natural hair has become a popular trend and considered a healthier alternative to chemicals for African-American women.  Moreover, natural hair requires less maintenance and is often a better alternative for someone who does not have a great deal of time to spend on hair.  Black hair stylists often fail to service customers with naturals because the hair can be difficult to detangle. However, there are great products such as the Diva By Cindy Leave-In  infused with B vitamins to help solve this problem. Stylists who eliminate natural hair services from their menu, claiming it's time-consuming can increase their clientele by using a detangler to minimize the time it takes to wash and style naturals.  Thereby, making the  experience much more comfortable for their clients.

Black hair salons do not always give great customer service. . Unfortunately, customers often experience,
  • long wait times, (sometimes up to 4 hours or longer to receive services),
  • use of mobile devices while Hair is being styled,
  • lack of attention to detail (for example cutting off too much of a person's hair or not giving them the right color)
  • Failure to use and retail good hair products is another problem or common complaint of clients.

Despite these negatives, stylists can do a number of things to improve client satisfaction and increase the willingness of clients to return to salons.
Just as you  don't leave the doctors office without a prescription, a stylist should not allow their clients to leave their chair without a prescribed or recommended plan of hair care follow-up after leaving  the salon. Failure to do so leaves clients with only a couple of  options;  to peruse the Internet for follow-up hair care products or to go to the neighborhood drugstore or beauty supply store and figure out what they need. Unfortunately, this does not produce  loyalty to their stylist.

Failure to implement customer loyalty programs another reason why women are not visiting black hair care salons.  Salons can increase their clientele by offering the following: 1)customer loyalty card programs such as coupons 2) free retail products for spending a given amount at the salon, 3) birthday cards with coupons and  other well-thought-out loyalty programs, will help clients return to salons more often

The advent of Salon Suites have also taken away the salon experience. Gone are the days we would walk in a salon and have women sharing, bonding, and connecting in an open space. As a result, without the necessary foot traffic to some of the Suites, stylists sit and wait and wonder where and when the next clients are going to arrive. Without aggressive marketing and Salon incentives mentioned above, there will continue to be a decline in the numbers of clients for the stylist. Stylists will have no option but to work   part-time to supplement their income).

We visit salons to be pampered, and the services must transcend the experience. Stylists must be willing to work with all hair types and textures in addition to chemically processed hair or Natural hair). African-American stylists must also be willing to perform these services in a timely manner. We all love to receive gifts and incentives.  Thus, incentives should be in place to maintain a flow of reciprocity between client and Beautician. Carefully thought out incentives go a long way to help retain our black clientele.   Salons and Stylist must examine their company's mission and overall vision, revamped practices to include the words timely, relaxing, tranquil environment to attract and maintain their clients. Implementation of a few well-thought-out ideas which involves putting our customers well being ahead of profits will increase our bottom line

Hair Relaxers: Debunking the Myth

Chemical Column

Hair Relaxers became very popular in the 80’s,
after people realized the jheri curl couldn’t give
them versatility and was too greasy. No lye
relaxers were formulated due to the complaints of burning
from women who were getting relaxer services. No lye
relaxers were presented as a gentler/milder form of relaxer
without the lye.
Women happily grabbed boxes of relaxer and applied their
chemicals at home to save money, and for convenience.
When they’re hair became dry and brittle, and began to
shed they couldn’t understand why their hair did not look
like the models on the boxes.
The reason: The no lye relaxers come in two forms, calcium
hydroxide and lithium hydroxide. (CaOH is the chemical
formula for calcium hydroxide.) The OH at the end of
this compound is actually the base/lye component. The
calcium causes deposits on the hair, causing it to become
dry and brittle.
Because hair consists of three layers and relaxer penetrates
to the seond layer of the hair to break polypeptide
(protein) bonds. The cuticle (first layer of the hair) remains
open if relaxer is just rinsed and neutralized after processing.
(Which causes splitting, shedding, and breakage.)
In 2007 Diva By Cindy hair care company developed a three
step condition hair relaxer system, which would resolve this
problem. A sodium hydroxide (NaOH) relaxer containing

aloe and shea butter was developed. (The aloe is to soothe
and prevent burns, and the shea butter to moisturize).
After the relaxer is rinsed a product called the Stabilizer
Plus (or the Ultimate Treatment) is applied. This product
seals the cuticle or hair shaft, and rearranges the polypeptide
or protein bonds which were broken. Because
the pH of hair is acidic and relaxer is a base/or alkali, the
pH of the stabilizer is a 3 (acidic). The purpose of the stabilizer
is to bring hair back to its normal acid mantle pH.
Process: Relax hair, rinse relaxer, apply stabilizer, rinse
after 2-3 minutes, and shampoo with Diva By Cindy
Neutralizer. Shedding and breakage is a thing of the
past, now women can enjoy straighter hair with body
and bounce. Healthy hair can be attained by all who
wish to relax their hair.

Caring for Your Hair- Changing Color, Choosing Wisely

Caring for Your Hair - Changing Color, Choosing Wisely

By Cindy Tawiah, C.E.O. of Diva by Cindy Hair Products

Summer is a hot time to consider a cool color for your hair. A change in hair hue can alter a woman's appearance and attitude. But before going fire engine red or honey blonde, here is information that can help with deciding if a semi, demi or permanent color is the best option for you.

Add Depth

If you are seeking to add depth to your natural color, then a semi-permanent (rinse) is for you. It requires no mixing and lasts for approximately eight to 12 washes. Semi-permanents are great for adding red tones to brown hair. Two examples of semi-permanent color brands are Adore and Jazzing.

Add Degrees

For an intense, longer lasting color, select a demi-permanent. It’s ammonia-free, and lasts longer than a semi-permanent, while causing less damage than a permanent. Demi-permanents are healthy alternatives for covering grey and using immediately following a relaxer or permanent wave services.  Clairol Radiance is an example of a demi-permanent hair color.

Add Drama

Whether you decide to go fire red or jet-black, a permanent is the best option when selecting a color that is shades lighter or darker than your natural color. It is best to have permanent color applied by a professional stylist, to minimize the breakage and damage to your hair.

Revlon and L’Oreal Paris have permanent hair color options.

After any type of color service, defeat dryness and damage by utilizing a conditioning treatment such as Diva by Cindy Ultimate Treatment to balance the ph, seal the cuticles, and soften the hair.

Remember, hair coloring is a process that can bring about disastrous consequences if the right type is not selected, so chose wisely!

Natural Hair Care with oils

The human scalp naturally produces oil known as sebum which helps to reduce flakiness and

prevents hair from looking dull and dry. Application of oils to the hair and scalp should be done sparingly or in moderation. The main thing that black hair needs is moisture which needs to be replenished routinely to ensure healthy hair. That being said there are a variety of oil based products which promise to alleviate dryness and have been known to work. A few of these oils are Olive Oil, Coconut Oil and Argan Oil to mention a few. For years women have greased their scalps, bathed in oils and requested hot oil treatments or applied the oils to their hair. The objective was to relieve dryness and give dull dry hair a shine. Olive oil has superior penetrating power and is sometimes used in brilliantine hair dressings, emollients, eyelash oils , lipstick, nail polish removers, shampoos, face powder, anti wrinkle creams and massage oils. It is a pale yellow or greenish oil obtained from ripe olives grown around the Mediterranean Sea. Coconut oil is another oil which is contained in hair dressing products, soaps and shampoos. It lathers readily and is a great skin cleanser. Theobroma Cacao( Cocoa ) is used to make cocoa butter and is a solid fat expressed from the roasted seeds of the cocoa plant. It helps heal or fade stretch marks and scars and can also be used in haircare preparations.

Argania Spinosa ( Argan tree from Morocco) produces Argan oil. It has become a widely used oil in many products and has been widely marketed for cosmetic use as a Mo-

roccan oil. Argan oil contains Tocopherols (vitamin E) and is

also known for its healing properties.

Oils applied directly to hair can cause hair to become

weighed down and greasy. It can also lead to product

build up on the scalp which leads to flakiness and cause

the scalp to itch. The percentage of oil in quality hair care

product formulas is in minimal portions . These are very

light oils not as heavy as with the hot oil and olive oils.

These hair care formulations are also blended with proteins

, conditioners , and moisturizers which further reduces the

portions of oil .

Moisture is the key to healthy hair. After all when a plant is

dry and it is in soil we water it or hydrate it. We don’ pour

oil in the soil. Dry hair should be treated the same way using

products which help add or maintain moisture levels in

the hair. And if oils are used they should be done sparingly

and not as a matter of routine. Try putting a drop of oil on

a blank piece of paper and notice it spreads. Therefore

oil should be recommended for use in smaller doses and

quality hair care products containing these products can

be purchased and used. After all the goal for many of your

customers is to have healthy hair and to grow their hair.

LET ME HELP YOU RELAX YOUR HAIR!

Hello Ladies!,

Some of you experience hair breakage and damage from relaxers/perms and consequently decide to go natural or get your hair cut short and start all over again or resort to braiding and weaving to give your hair a break from chemical processes.

My mission is to help you achieve longer, healthier hair and help you uncover why your hair remains dry and brittle after you have followed the instructions to a T on that box perm (which has the picture of the lovely model with the long flowy hair).

Box perms contain CaOH (Calcium hydroxide), Calcium hydroxide has a pH greater than 7 which makes it a lye (alkali). The notion of no-lye is actually a 'lie' and most women are also unaware of the effects of calcium on their hair. If the benefits of calcium are to help strengthen the bones and teeth then I leave you to deduce what the effects of calcium are on your hair ... Yes hard dry brittle hair !
Hair is not a single strand when viewed under a microscope. It consists of a cuticle, cortex and medulla. With the Diva By Cindy relaxer, your hair will be nourished from the inside out. The Diva By Cindy relaxer is infused with Aloe (Aloe is naturally soothing, moisturizing and healing).

After hair is relaxed with the Diva By Cindy hair relaxer and rinsed, the Diva By Cindy Stabilizer is applied (this is what sets the the DIVA Relaxer apart from the others). Because protein(polypeptide bonds) are broken during a relaxer application, you cannot merely rinse a relaxer and neutralize. The cuticle which was opened during the chemical process needs to be closed and the bonds rearranged. After the Diva By Cindy stabilizer is rinsed (approximately 2-5 minutes on the hair),  the Diva by Cindy neutralizer which contains mink oils is then applied to remove all traces of the relaxer. Neutralizer should be applied and rinsed three to four times.

For extra bouncy hair you apply the Diva by Cindy Stimulating Deep Conditioner for a few minutes, rinse and follow with the Diva By Cindy Leave-In Detangler and proceed to style.

Enjoy longer, healthier hair.

Relaxers applied by your stylists help prevent overlap. If you are a pro at applying your own relaxer, it is still a good idea to schedule regular trims with your favorite stylist to help the overall health of your hair.

As always the truth is what I give you. For more information check us out on http://www.divabycindy.net for your free samples and more information.

Love Always,

Cindy

NATURAL HAIR DIVAS: MAINTENANCE TIPS

Hello ladies,

The question I am asked often is "How do I care for my hair in its natural state?".  Natural hair needs moisture and deep conditioning once a month.  Scalp health, as always, is very important.  Shampoo hair weekly with a peppermint based shampoo, such as the Diva By Cindy Stimulating Shampoo, then apply the Diva By Cindy Stimulating Conditioner.  This conditioner can be used with or without a plastic cap.  After rinsing conditioner from hair, apply Leave In Detangler liberally and blow dry, braid, twist, or style hair.  When blow drying natural hair, section in four sections and blow dry downwards to ensure hair has a smooth finish.  When twisting natural hair, apply Purr-fect Edges and twist hair.

Enjoy Divalicious hair!!!

DIVA BY CINDY'S ULTIMATE TREATMENT

Whatever we do with our hair, we need to let it drink up a hair cocktail in order to keep its moisture levels and pH levels balanced.  The Diva By Cindy Ultimate Treatment with a pH of 3 takes hairs pH back to its optimal range of 5.5.  It also seals the cuticle (first layer) of the hair and not only repairs hair and prevents splitting and shedding of hair, it imparts a glossy shine to hair and makes it more manageable.

How to use Ultimate Treatment:  Shampoo hair 3 times with Diva By Cindy Moisture Shampoo, rinse and apply Hair Treatment and sit under warm dryer or place plastic cap over head and leave in hair for approximately 15 minutes.  Rinse thoroughly and mist hair with Diva By Cindy Leave In Detangler or Hair Polish.  You may proceed to style.  Shedding and breakage stops instantly!

Enjoy Divalicious hair!

Love always,

Cindy

SHAMPOOING BASICS FOR DIVALICIOUS HAIR!

We have all heard that shampooing too frequently is not good for the hair because it strips oils from the hair.  Nothing could be farther from the truth.  One of the best things you could do for your hair is shampoo it every four days and even more if you choose.  A moisture shampoo (such as Diva by Cindy Moisture and Detangling Shampoo) will replenish the hair and infuse hair with much needed moisture.  For dry, itchy, flaky scalp and thinning hair, a stimulating shampoo (such as Diva by Cindy Stimulating Shampoo with peppermint and menthol) will stimulate circulation and promote healthier hair to grow.  The added benefit of using a stimulating shampoo is its ability to remove dandruff and treat it.  Three shampoos ensure hair is thoroughly cleansed.  Since conditioners are not designed to be effective after more than five days, conditioning every four days will allow the conditioner to build a "conditioning base" causing the hair to become stronger and healthier.  An alternative to constant conditioning is using a Leave In Detangling Conditioner.

After conditioning your hair, rinse thoroughly and proceed to style. If you tend to blow dry, ensure a light polish is applied to the hair after flat ironing or curling. A flat iron when applied to hair with oil sheen or polish will sizzle, causing damage to hair. At bedtime, a light, silk scarf should be used. Ensure that scarfs, hair brushes, and combs are washed and kept clean.

What is a conditioner and why it should be used regularly?: A conditioner is the key that unlocks the mystery and the secret to beautiful, healthy hair. There are two major types of conditioners - a non-penetrating and penetrating. The non-penetrating conditioner coats the cuticle layer with a microfilm coating. A penetrating conditioner, like the Diva Stabilizer, goes deep into the cortex layer of the hair shaft to restore vital proteins in the hair and seals the cuticle to prevent hair shedding and breakage. Penetrating conditioners are recommended for use at least once a month. This ensures optimal health of your hair.

Enjoy Divalicious hair!

Cindy

HAIR LOSS PREVENTION TIPS

Hair loss either through breakage/shedding and thinning is a very common complaint amongst black woman. The problem is caused by various factors.  Tension or pulling from tight braids, ponytails, barrettes and weaves are some of the reasons women experience 'Traction alopecia.'  Hair loss from stress and medication is another source. Dryness due to the use of products containing alcohol, over processing of hair with chemicals is another cause of hair loss for particularly black women who may get a relaxer and receive hair color of a lighter shade which strips the hair of melanin causing hair to look and feel dry and brittle.

As women with ethnic hair, we have all experienced shedding and the frustration of having our hair on the floor and in the combs, are difficult to deal with.  As a woman who has researched and experienced this problem. I believe I have an answer or remedy, which if used consistently will rectify 99.9% of the problem.

1. Shampoo hair three times with our Moisture Shampoo, rinse and apply Stabilizer Plus.
2. Sit under Warm dryer for 20 minutes or cover hair with plastic cap for 15 minutes.
3. Rinse hair thoroughly, spray Leave-in-Detangler and proceed with styling.  The Diva Leave-in-Detangler penetrates the hair shaft and closes the cuticle.

At bedtime apply Diva Super-Gro sparingly to scalp and tie hair with silk scarf.
Enjoy Divalicous hair!

HAIR CARE TIPS FOR THE WINTER

Have you wondered how to care for your hair during the cold winter months?  Constant shedding and dryness can be bothersome.  I have some surefire ways to keep your hair Divalicious during this season!

Winterization Tips For Our Hair

Winter can be a trying time for our hair.  The lack of moisture in the atmosphere causes dryness and damage.  Oil and grease are not the answer.  A deep conditioning treatment is needed once a month.  The Diva Stimulating Conditioner is the deepest, best suited product because of its ability to penetrate the cuticle (first layer of the hair).  Shampoo hair with the Moisture Shampoo three times, rinse thoroughly, and then apply the  Stimulating Conditioner.  Cover hair with a processing cap and sit under a warm dryer for 5-10 minutes.  If a hooded dryer is not available, wear the cap for 15-20 minutes.  Rinse hair and apply Leave in Detangler (which fortifies hair with panthenol and other nourishing ingredients).  You may wrap, roller set, or blowdry and style.  Lightly spray Hair Polish for shine.  For a dry scalp,  apply Super Gro (enriched with shea butter, peppermint and other natural emollients for the scalp).  Finally, remember to wear your silk scarf so as to prevent cotton sheets and pillows cases from robbing hair of moisture.  Remember, our hair needs moisture not heavy grease or oils which clog up pores.  Enjoy Divalicious,  healthy hair!!

Cindy
